Somehow Orlando Bloom parlayed his role in Lord of the Rings into big parts of five other motion pictures, six if you count the third Pirates movie.  This is only the second one I have seen, but he once again leaves me cold.  He does a nice job in all the action stuff, but othewise doesn’t seem like a real person.  Does he keep getting parts because he is good looking?  How come the only thing Viggo has done is Hidalgo?

Anyway, I enjoyed all the fighting and portrayals of feudal life in this film, though I did not get a chance to watch the special features.  It had a history channel special on and some other documentary that might be more interesting than the movie.  Though probably not as many action scenes.  The parts I liked about the movie might have been enough to bump this up to a B+, but Bloom’s character and some aspects of the plot were just a little too ridiculous.  I appreciate Ridley Scott trying to solve the Middle East conflicts, but he should stick to chopping people up.

  1. Now listen here...

Viggo was in History of Violence, which was interesting. Not this type of actiony thing, though. I’m going to blog on that one some day…
I’m a sucker for these types of movies. I don’t know what it is, but I like the predictability and the inspirational “man finds his inner strength” story-line. A lot like Gladiator and the Last Samurai, though not quite as good as either (probably because of Orlando).

i am all for watching a movie about a guy getting his act together but there are some dubious issues of that guy being orlando and getting his act together through his relationship to God and ability to kill people.
